Poetry: David Wagoner; Based on legends and myths ot Northwest Coast and Plateau Indians
Duration: 20 minutes

"For the occasion Paulus wrote a cycle of four songs...on four poems from David
Wagoner's 'Who ShaH be the Sun?' The imagery of the poems is based on Northwest Indian
lore dealing with nightfall, sleep, ghastly dreams and reawakening. Paulus' style is a
modem romanticism that can touch the heart as well as the raw nerve, that kind of fine
balance between the lyric utterance and harsh dissonance achieved by Alban Berg
or...Benjamin Britten. Despite an orchestral palette colorful enough to evoke the coming of
evening fire and nightmarish monsters, Paulus always managed to avoid overwhelming
the singer................. There are very few compositions I have heard among those recently
composed for solo voice and orchestra that have seemed so effective and moving....
                                                                                                            a briHiant new piece....... "
