Manhattan Sinfonietta

I. Lively
II. Graceful and Delicate
III. Punchy

Instrumentation: 2-1-2-1, 1-2-1-0, timp, 2 perc, str Duration: 15 minutes

"The first movement opens with tremolando violins which precede the entry of a short
melody in the vibraphone then solo clarinet. The movement continues with rhythmic
eighth-note chords traded between woodwind and string families, mingled with a
percussive underlay. Later solo oboe and solo flute playa spritely melodic figure over
strings in mixed meter. The middle movement begins with quiet strings and timpani in
gently oscillating series of chords. A long and fluid melodic idea appears in the flute, then
the oboe and horn. Woodwinds take up the chords while first violins carry the solo melody. Horn, Oboe and Flute close by combining their melodies in a trio over the strings. The last
movement opens with an outburst of four chords in dotted rhythm. Continuing throughout
in 2/4 time, with much trading of gestures between various families of the orchestra."
