Duration: 16 minutes
"Ice Fields is a five-movement affair of shifting rhythms and harmonies, capitalizing on the syncopated, right-hand style made famous by Kottke on his 12-string acoustic guitar.
The opening, 'Times 12,' was an energetic, cheerful, upbeat piece full of rhythmic complexites. 'Griddle Slide' had a bluesy style and was inspired by the Paul Bunyan
legend. Shimmering strings and percussion were added to the haunting middle section. After a lyrical 'Summer Growing Old,' featuring trombone and guitar, the suite endd with a bravura, virtuosic display for guitar."
--Fort Wayne Philharmonic premiere review
"Fans of Leo Kottke know him as a supremely inventive guitarist, one whose highly original style transcends the categoris of popular music--bluegrass, ragtime, jazz and another musical boundary by joining forces with a symphony orchestra. Mr Kittke did this by proposing to composer Stephen Paulus a collaborative work for guitar and orchestra."
--Paul Schiavo program notes
"...a suite for amplified acoustic steel-string guitar and chamber orchestra...This
collaborative work strikes a bold new direction for fingerstle guitar...
Orchestration that Paulus adds...is striking, beautiful and right."
