The Age of American Passions
Work for Orchestra
Instrumentation: 2-2-2-2, 4-2-3-1, timp, 2 per, str
Duration: 27 minutes
"Paulus' [work] is made up of choice ingredients...It all adds up to a uniquely American
sound, sprinkled with kindly dissonance and garnished with a touch of romantic lushness."
--David Coco, Baton Rouge Journal
"In composing, The Age of American Passions my intent was to create a work that would
express, musically, through the medium of the symphony orchestra, some significant aspects
of the American spirit. There was never any attempt to link the work with a particular
holiday
or historical figure. Rather, I wanted to suggest character traits or attitudes that make up the
American psyche."
